By Randi Wilson, C.I.D.  |  Interior Decorator: One of the most popular New Year’s resolutions is home de-cluttering and organization. An organized home reduces stress, saves time and frees up valuable space. The key to success is to focus on one room at a time.  Begin the de-cluttering process by sorting items into four piles or categories:

Keep: Items that get used on a regular basis.  They should be in good, clean condition and used at least once per week.

Donate/Sell: Gently used items that are rarely utilized and have no sentimental value.  If you donate an item valued at over $50, ask for a receipt from the donation center so that you can deduct the contribution on your tax form.

Trash/Recycle:  Items that are no longer usable due to wear or damage.

Storage:  Items that hold sentimental value and special memories, but don’t get used on a regular basis.

Now that you’ve de-cluttered the room, shift your focus to organization. You must decide if you wish to hide or display the items you have decided to keep in the room. Begin the organization process by sorting these items into two piles or categories:

Hide: Useful, but not beautiful, items.  Storage ottomans and furniture with drawers and cabinets are convenient places to stash items. You can also use baskets, bins and decorative boxes in a variety of colors and materials to help conceal objects. Pick a color palette and use it throughout the room to create a sense of cohesion and order.  Label bins with attractive stickers or tags tied with ribbon so that items can be easily found and returned to the proper container.

Display: Items that have visual appeal.  Large items can sit atop tables, counter tops, bookcases or open shelving. Small objects can be corralled in pretty trays, decorative bowls and glass canisters.

We’ve all heard that old adage, “a place for everything and everything in its place”.   This time-tested idea holds true.  De-cluttering and organization increases your ability to accomplish more and enjoy life to its fullest.
